Employment contracts at the University of Basel are issued in German. For foreign-languageemployees, translation assistance passes for staff on monthly salaries and staff on hourly wages.

Permanent employees are insured with the Cantonof Basel-Stadt Pension Fund and temporary staff with the Basellandschaftliche Pensionskasse.

Newly recruited employees will receive the entry documents for the new pension fund directly by post approximately 1 month after starting employment. Vested benefits from previous pension funds can then be transferred to the new pension fund.

Changes of address before the start of employment should be reported to the decentralized HR department or your line manager.

You can use Self Services to change your address after the start of employment and once the key data sheets are available.

You canuse this form to apply for family and maintenance allowances. The family equalization fund will then decide on the payment of a corresponding allowance. The maintenance allowance is paid automatically together with the family allowance.

PhD students must matriculate by the next possible deadline - by July 31 in the fall semester and by January 5 in the spring semester. After these dates, applications for a doctorate will be accepted until October 15 in the fall semester and until March 15 in the spring semester.

The initial permit is applied for by the responsible HR Operations Team of the central HR department.

  • Upon receipt of the application, the Canton of Basel-Stadt Migration Office will send the relevant HR Operations Team a letter with a date on which the employees should present themselves to the Migration Office. This letter is forwarded to the person addressed. Once the appointment has been made, the central HR department receives the G-approval in credit card format, which in turn is sent directly to the employee's home.
  • The Basel-Land Migration Office does not issue appointment letters to employees. Employees in the canton of Basel-Land must register for an appointment themselves.

Third-country nationals receive a cross-border commuter permit if they have been resident in a border area accepted by the university for 6 months or more. Otherwise they must be resident in Switzerland.

 

 

If the approval is not yet available when the employee starts work, but the application for approval has been submitted by central HR and the date for data collection has been set by the Migration Office, issuing the approval is only a formality. When crossing the border, employees can present the letter "Data collection for the cross-border commuter permit", which they have received from the responsible HR Operations Team at central HR.

Salary payments are generally only made to Swiss bank accounts (CH-IBAN). However, there are exceptions, so please contact your local HR department directly if you have any questions.

The employees themselves are responsible for the installation and operation of the working environment at home. The University of Basel does not contribute to any expenses. Further information can be found in the home office information sheet.

Employees who work eight or more hours a week are insured against occupational and non-occupational accidents under accident insurance. For a weekly workload of less than eight hours, employees are only insured against occupational accidents and must insure themselves against non-occupational accidents. In addition, all employees are covered by AXA's daily sickness benefits insurance.

In principle, compulsory insurance is based on the place of employment principle. This means that people who work in Switzerland must take out health insurance in Switzerland.

Cross-border commuters can make use of the right of option and can submit an application for exemption from the insurance obligation to the responsible public authorities in the canton of employment up to 3 months after the start of employment.

Employees are responsible for taking out their own health insurance.
